Description
When the power of Love
Overcomes the love of Power
The World will know Peace.
Until recently, I didn't know that the Tulip is considered a Symbol of Peace. This is the story of how it came to be.
The story of the peace flower begins in World War II when the Dutch royal family fled to Ottawa, Canada, for safety. While in Ottawa, Queen Juliana gave birth to her daughter. That day the Canadian Parliament declared the wing of the hospital where she gave birth to be Dutch territory, so when the family went home the baby could one day inherit the throne. When the war ended and the family returned, Queen Juliana began sending thousands of tulip bulbs to Ottawa each year for their kindness.
In 1990, Ottawa gave the United States a tulip garden in Washington, D.C., in recognition of their friendship and for sharing the world's longest undefended border. This began a worldwide tradition when each year one country presents another country, and only one country, with a tulip garden in its capital city as an acknowledgement of their continual commitment to peace.
"Of all of the flowers, the tulip is the best for peace because it includes the entire color spectrum from white to black. It's a flower for every race, color and creed." (quote by Jeanette DeGoede, one of the owners of Tulip Town ~ part of the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival)
